Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of approach shafts down to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it called a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
